We Didn’t Eat with Utensils

In the Middle Ages, the fork didn’t exist, and knives and spoons were rare. Most people ate with their hands—rarely washed hands, of course. Since hygiene wasn’t a priority, meals were like a real buffet of bacteria.

Between the grime under fingernails and shared dishes, one wonders how some survived dinner. Let’s take a moment to thank the existence of forks… and soap.
