25. Pangolin (Manis spp.)

The pangolin is a scaly mammal resembling a living pine cone or armored dinosaur, covered head to toe in overlapping keratin scales. Found in Africa and Asia, it walks on its hind legs or curls into a tight ball when threatened.
Its defense and diet leave grown-ups speechless. When attacked, it rolls into an impenetrable armored ball that even lions and tigers can’t crack open. It has no teeth but a tongue longer than its body that slurps up thousands of ants and termites daily. Pangolins are the most trafficked mammal on Earth, yet most adults had never heard of them until recently. This “walking artichoke” proves nature created the ultimate suit of armor long before medieval knights existed.
