Pam Grier (“Coffy”, 1973)
Pam Grier, born on May 26, 1949, has earned the title of cinema’s first African-American female action star. Originally named Pamela Suzette Grier, she began appearing in action films in the early 1970s. Grier gained fame through her roles in films like “Coffy” and “Foxy Brown.”
In “Coffy,” she took on the role of a nurse who seeks revenge on some drug dealers in the city. Her character was described as “the baddest one-woman army that ever hit town!” and was also promoted in the film’s trailer. The film was full of sensual and violent elements and experienced commercial success.
