Myth: Manual Transmissions Are More Efficient Than Automatics

In the past, if you wanted the best gas mileage, you had to shift your own gears. Old automatic transmissions were “slushy” and inefficient, losing power through the torque converter. Manuals were lighter and allowed for better control. However, this is another myth that has been killed by modern technology. Today’s automatics and CVTs (Continuously Variable Transmissions) are far more advanced and efficient than any human driver.
Modern automatics often have 8, 9, or even 10 speeds, allowing the engine to stay in its “sweet spot” at all times. They can shift faster and more precisely than a professional racer. While manual cars are still great for enthusiasts who enjoy the engagement, they can no longer claim the crown for fuel economy or performance.
