Myth: AWD Cars Can Brake Faster in Snow

Many people with All-Wheel Drive (AWD) feel invincible in the winter, believing their car can stop on a dime because it “has more grip.” This is a lethal misunderstanding. AWD helps you accelerate in the snow by sending power to all four wheels, but it does absolutely nothing to help you stop. Every single car on the road—whether 2WD or AWD—already has four-wheel braking.

When you hit the brakes on ice, you are limited by the friction of your tires, not how many wheels are connected to the engine. An AWD SUV is actually heavier and may take longer to stop than a small front-wheel-drive car. If you want to stop better in the snow, you need winter tires, not a fancy drivetrain.
